Day 1 - Queenstown

On Sunday we meet you off your flight at Queenstown Airport and transfer you to the Heritage Hotel. You have enough free time to fall in love with this beautiful alpine village. A dinner at one of the many restaurants beside the lake is just one of numerous options available for you this evening.

Fiordland Cruise

Day 2 - Queenstown / Fiordland

After a leisurely breakfast we will collect you at 10 am with a private coach. You travel through this beautiful countryside, stopping at a cafe along the way, before arriving at Lake Te Anau. The helicopters depart from 2pm for a sensational 30 minute scenic flight that has you landing on the ‘Island Passage’ heli-pad deep inside Dusky Sound. After settling into your cabin and meeting the crew you can relax as you take in these sensational surroundings. Our famous welcome dinner is served from 7pm in the main dining room.

Day 3 - Dusky Sound

Cruise through the stunning Cook Channel to Pickersgill Harbour, named by Capt. James Cook during his 6-week stay here in 1773.  Go ashore at Astronomer Point. The observations made by William Wales at this point had New Zealand become the most accurately located place on the globe at that time. Cook’s position was out by only 0.27 of a nautical mile in latitude and 11.07 nautical miles in longitude. We continue to cruise in Dusky Sound and visit the rugged Shag Islands and Luncheon Cove, the site of New Zealand’s first European and sealers settlement.

Day 4 - Dusky Sound

Start the day with a visit to early conservationist Richard Henry’s historic house site on Pigeon Island. We continue onto Facile harbour, site of NZ’s first known European ship wreck.  Cruise through Earshell Cove and the narrow channel of Resolution Island.

Day 5 - Breaksea Sound

We continue to explore deep inside the fiords, venturing into Wet Jacket and Vancouver Arm. We spend the evening here at anchor in a favourite sheltered cove in the midst of this scenic wonderland.

Day 6 - Dagg and Doubtful Sounds

We depart Breaksea Sound for the short sea passage to Dagg Sound. You will see many of our sea birds including albatross varieties, sooty shearwaters and there could be the possibility to see dolphins and on rare occasions we encounter whales. In the late afternoon we sail further north to Doubtful Sound. The scenery is spectacular and our overnight anchorage provides sensational views.

Day 7 - Doubtful Sound

This morning we explore the beautiful Doubtful Sound and venture to Elizabeth Island before our rendezvous with the departure helicopters. The late morning flight out takes us over Doubtful and serene Lake Manapouri to meet the aircraft waiting in Te Anau Airport for the short flight back to Queenstown. We will have you back at the Heritage Hotel by mid-afternoon where your room is booked for the Saturday night. The evening is free to explore Queenstown, dinner at a lakeside restaurant or a vineyard. Another option is to take the steamer across the lake to Walter Peak sheep station for dinner gives you a glimpse of life in the high country.

Day 8 - Sunday - Queenstown

On this final day we transfer you to Queenstown Airport for your onward travel. Thank you for joining us on this Fiordland Experience and we do hope to see you onboard again on another of our sailings.

Flexibility is a hallmark of small ship cruising. Our day-to-day itineraries are subject to change, sometimes without notice, due to operational reasons, the remoteness of the destination and/or the weather and sea conditions. All decisions of change are final at the Captain’s discretion.

This World Heritage Park is full of some of the world’s most magnificent scenery. Located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, Fiordland stretches over 120 miles (200 kilometres) from Milford Sound in the north to Preservation Inlet in the south. The Park covers some 1.25 million hectares and is the largest National Park in New Zealand. It is also one of the wettest places in the world but it is this rain that contributes to the area's beauty. Waterfalls tumble down steep mountains to the fiords and rain nourishes rich beech forest. The extraordinary Fiordland coastline and very deep branching lakes were carved out by glaciers millions of years ago. The glaciers left behind a land internationally acclaimed for its absolutely spectacular scenery, isolation and uninhabited environment which became a designated World Heritage Area in 1986.

AdventureSmith Explorations Adventure Specialist Andrew Browning reviews his Fiordland National Park Cruise aboard the Island Passage. Read on for his expert review and photos.

The scenery in these remote sounds is stunning. We had some mornings with very calm waters deep in the fjords. Surrounding the narrow waterways are mountains, steep cliffs and waterfalls. Nearly every inch is covered with vegetation except for where landslides have swept it away. When you go out into the Tasman Sea to go between the fjords, there are a lot of sea birds, including albatross that tend to follow the ship, especially when fish are being caught. You can also sea dolphins, typically near Milford Sound. The dolphins like the Island Passage ship because of the catamaran dual hull. They like to swim in front of the ship riding in the water being pushed by the vessel. Fur seals can also be seen in some areas of Fiordland.
